Jacob Kurtz has been kind enough to open his home to us for our next gathering.  He will provide burgers to devour while watching Freakonomics.  Due to some scheduling conflicts, we will diverge from our typical Friday evening meeting time to Sunday afternoon, May 1@ 1pm.  I can’t think of a better way to spend an East Tennessee Sunday afternoon.  Jacob will post the Google Maps link to his home below.  Hope to see you all there.  Be sure and post in the comment section below if you plan to attend to help with a food count!

As several of the members of the Longwood Institute have ties to Maryville College, I thought I would provide  the text of the speech from last weeks inauguration of the new President of the college, Dr. Tom Bogart.  He is an economist by trade and is super friendly in person.   Hopefully, he will be able to provide strong and grounded leadership to the school, who, like everyone in these times, faces several challenges.

3 Cups of Phony?

While we should remain innocent until proven guilty in the courts of law, it seems as though Greg Mortenson has been convicted by the court of public opinion due to the recent news of the alleged falsification of his stories in the book 3 Cups of Tea, which the prestigious Longwood Institute digesteed last year.  Thought it was an interesting development that we can discuss further at our April meeting (which will probably be moved to Sunday April 30th @ Jacob’s home).  Anyway, the Montana AG has started his investigation, and we anxiously await his results.
